February while being the shortest month has several events and holidays. February 2nd marks Groundhog Day and Imbolc (St. Bridget’s Day - Ireland). Later in the month we have the Superbowl on 2/12, Valentine’s Day on 2/14 and Presidents Day on 2/20.
All of these holidays around the start of February have themes of purification, seeking signs of spring, planting seeds (at least in our mind first), return of the light and lengthening of the days. The larger metaphysical themes are self-love, romantic love, gathering, sports, inner journeys and honoring the divine within.
February is the 2nd month of the year and in Numerology the number represents the feminine in both grace and power. It is cooperative, always aiming to bring peace and balance to a relationship or a situation. 2 is also the number of partnerships -- the coming together of two individual people, concepts, or things.
I am often guided to write in the blog in the month of February about all aspects of love. Probably because in February we celebrate Valentines day. These past few weeks I have had several conversations with friends and clients about what “self-love” really means. My friend and fellow healer Kacey Morabito Grean (www.kaceysplace.com) helped me to create a new daily mantra. “How will I love myself today?”. Her recent social media posts have prompted me to ask myself this one question in the morning. “How will I love myself today?” I have found this to be a powerful practice in helping me to choose wisely throughout the day. You can change it up if that question doesn’t resonate. Maybe it is “What is one gift I will give myself today?” It can be a simple as a delicious of tea all the way to the more elaborate I will book a vacation today. This one question “How will I love myself today?” has helped to shift me in the past few weeks on my own journey. I share it here with my clients and friends with love.
Following up this practice, I had a discussion with a dear friend who was struggling with allowing herself the financial commitment to her own healthcare. She had for years and years put others first. Her family, her friends, and certainly her children’s needs always came before her own. She worked hard to have the financial means to help everyone else. But as she matured she realized we all make decisions in life on how we are going to spend our “capital”. Capital is used here intentionally instead of money. Capital implies to me that it means our money, our time, our energy. It took a little bit of thought and analysis for her to realize if she simple chose to trim in other areas of her life (one less night out to dinner for instance) she could afford to have the healthcare she chooses. She also came to the realization that perhaps not everything she was “giving” to others was absolutely necessary. She had an epiphany of sorts that she had “give to herself”. I share his story with her permission because I feel it perfectly shows us what self-love is. I was so moved by her courage and her story. It is in these daily choices our lives unfold. In this example, she chose to love herself by choosing a more expensive healthcare plan that she knew was for her own best health and healing on every level.
Like many of you reading this I was raised to believe to put ourselves first was a “selfish” act. In actuality it is totally the opposite. We cannot be our full and vibrant selves if all we do is give to others all day every day. The way we can best show up as our authentic self for others is to choose to love ourselves first.
So…. “How will you love yourself today?
The Full Moon in February is on 2/5/23.
February’s full Snow Moon reaches peak illumination at 1:30 P.M. EST on Sunday, February 5. It will be below the horizon at this time, so for the best view of this Moon, look for it starting the night before or later on Sunday; it will drift above the horizon in the east around sunset and reach its highest point in the sky around midnight.
Why Is It Called the Snow Moon?
The full Moon names used by The Old Farmer’s Almanac come from a number of places, including Native American, Colonial American, and European sources. Traditionally, each full Moon name was applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred, not just to the full Moon itself.
The Snow Moon
The explanation behind February’s full Moon name is a fairly straightforward one: it’s known as the Snow Moon due to the typically heavy snowfall that occurs in February. On average, February is the United States’ snowiest month, according to data from the National Weather Service. In the 1760s, Captain Jonathan Carver, who had visited with the Naudowessie (Dakota), wrote that the name used for this period was the Snow Moon, “because more snow commonly falls during this month than any other in the winter.” Source: https://www.almanac.com/content/full-moon-february
